The Golden State Warriors resume their quest for a second championship. They signed Nemanja Bjelica and Otto Porter Jr. in the NBA free agency of 2024, indicating that they are seeking to add shooters to the mix. They also added Andre Iguodala on their roster, bolstering their core.
Klay Thompson is about to return after a two-year hiatus, which promises to be an exciting season. It’s too early to tell if Thompson’s comeback and the Warriors’ recent additions will pay off. Let’s evaluate the Dubs’ offseason, especially their acquisitions, for the sake of debate.
B+ for Nemanja Bjelica.
The Serbian was signed to a veteran’s minimum contract by the Warriors. They’ve been eyeing the 6-foot-10 stretch big since last season’s deadline, according to sources, implying that Kerr has something special in store for him. Indeed, Kerr likened Nemanja Bjelica to Mo Speights, but with a 3-point shot. Bjelica will very certainly be involved in many pick-and-pop plays with Draymond Green or perhaps Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, according to Kerr.
Bjelica has a career field goal percentage of 38.7%. He hit over 40% from three-point range in his last season with the Minnesota Timberwolves and his first two seasons with the Sacramento Kings. He was unlucky to go off the radar last season, as the Miami Heat didn’t use him nearly as much as he deserved. Bjelica has an opportunity to earn some attention this season.
B. Otto Porter Jr.
Porter has a lifetime shooting percentage of 40.2 percent from beyond the arc, which is insane. Porter would be one of the greatest 3-point shooters in the league if it weren’t for the injuries that have plagued him for the most of his career. Porter was on the brink of becoming a superstar after signing a four-year, $106.5 million deal with the Washington Wizards in 2017. A series of injuries proved to be significant roadblocks as he worked on his game to fulfill these expectations (which, as statistics show, was a tough trip). During his time with the Bulls, these ailments plagued him.
Porter’s poor rating may be due to this, despite the fact that he is an exceptional shooter. Injuries are unavoidable in sports. Porter has undoubtedly put forth a lot of effort to avoid being injured. However, there are a few athletes that are particularly prone to injury. We’ll have to wait and see what Porter’s role on the Warriors will be. If he comes off the bench, it’s possible that he won’t be injured.
Iguodala, Andre:
Warriors supporters were ecstatic with the acquisition of Andre Iguodala. After all, it was the return of the 2015 NBA Finals MVP, one of the game’s most intelligent players. At this stage in the rebuilding process, this is a wise decision.
Iguodala will join Curry, Green, and Thompson in the Warriors’ core. They’ll be the team’s leaders and will act as Kerr’s extension. The only reason we can’t award Iguodala a perfect score is because of his age.
Iguodala has shown in his two seasons with the Heat that he can still play 20 minutes per game. However, he will be 38 in January, and age has always been and will continue to be a factor in sports. We can assume that Iguodala will serve as a seasoned presence, which is fantastic. However, someone who can do so while still playing substantial minutes is superior.
