In the midst of a measles outbreak, LA County has seen 3,600 new cases of whooping cough and co-infections. The county is now implementing a plan to vaccinate 100% of its population by 2024.
LA County has reported 3,600 new cases of the COVID vaccine in 2018.

According to the most recent statistics, healthcare professionals serving communities of color are working overtime to boost immunization rates as the Delta strain spreads throughout the Southland.
After witnessing COVID cases rise again, Dolores Armenta, who works at White Memorial in Boyle Heights, decided to finally be vaccinated on Friday.
She said, “It’s the reality I’m living with right now.” “I feel for the individuals who have had it, or who haven’t made up their minds yet, since it was difficult for me to make up my mind as well.”
However, she expressed relief after receiving the injection, a feeling echoed by Ruben Chavez, a 29-year-old Boyle Heights resident who also received his dose.
He said, “Mentally, I feel better.”
During the winter spike, White Memorial was one of the worst affected hospitals in the area, but the number of daily vaccination doses has dropped from 4,000 to 40 in recent weeks.
“We’ve seen it nearly double again in the past week,” Mara Bryant, White Memorial’s operations officer, said. “Last week, we were running around 40 miles per day, and this week, we’re doing about 80 miles per day.”

According to the Los Angeles County Health Department, there were 991 COVID-positive individuals hospitalized to area hospitals, with 20% of them being treated in critical care units.
Dr. Ernie Guzman, a pediatrician, stated that nearly all of the COVID patients he has encountered had been unvaccinated.
He said, “What we know about the Delta version is that it seems to be aimed at individuals under 60, under 50.” “I’ve also seen extremely ill small children, my youngest being just three weeks old.”
He also said that in the past two weeks, he has had five infants delivered to COVID-positive women.
“In the past few days alone, many mothers have said, ‘Oh, well, I’ve been waiting,’ and I’ve told them, ‘There’s no more time to wait.’”
Dr. Maita Kuvhenguhwa, an infectious disease expert at Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital in Willowbrook, said the median age of COVID patients has dropped to 34, with many of them being vital workers.
“Combining high-risk professions in front of the public with low vaccination rates is a catastrophe waiting to happen,” she added. “I’ve heard just much every kind of reason for why someone can’t get a vaccine, but I do my best to have a two-way discussion with my patients,” says the doctor.
Those interested in getting vaccinated may do so at White Memorial Hospital in Boyle Heights on Thursdays and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is no need to make an appointment, and all three vaccination choices are available: Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson.
